Did you know there are technically two Masturbation Days? One is May 7th and the other one is May 28th. May 7th is the original Masturbation Day, starting back in 1995. In 2005, it was switched to May 28th due to the annual Masturbate-a-thon, a non-profit fundraiser for HIV Prevention that started in 1998. The Masturbate-a-thon was to encourage people to masturbate, similarly to a walk-a-thon, within the 24 hours of May 28.

Depending on where you are now, some places still celebrate it on May 7th, while others celebrate it on the 28th. Whichever day you decide to celebrate is up to you, in fact, any other day in May also works, because May is also known as International Masturbation Month. So celebrating masturbation anytime within the month of May is a good idea!

History of Masturbation Day

A classroom

It was started by a San Francisco-based sex shop, Good Vibrations, when they announced on May 7th of 1995 that they would like to honor and celebrate the General Surgeon of the United States, Dr. Joycelyn Elders. The shop was responding to the firing of Dr. Joycelyn Elders on May 7th, 1994 by then-President Clinton. Leading up to the firing, Dr. Elders had suggested including masturbation in students’ sex education in the hope to normalize masturbation and help educate more people on ways to prevent the spread of AIDS and practice safe sex. Dr. Elders’ progressive thinking was not welcome back then, unfortunately. However, since then, Masturbation Day has transformed into International Masturbation Month, which encourages people to celebrate masturbation and feel good doing it during the month of May.

You must be wondering ‘why should I celebrate Masturbation Day?’ Masturbation is a normal and natural part of life that anyone can enjoy if they want to. Celebrating Masturbation Day is a great way to help normalize the topics of sexuality and masturbation.

If you are not sure how to celebrate Masturbation Day, here are some things that we recommend:

1. Masturbate!

What better time to masturbate than on International Masturbation Day? Whether you pick May 7th or 28th or any day of May, have fun and enjoy some self-pleasuring time.

2. Talk about masturbation

Talking about masturbation or joining conversations regarding masturbation is a great way to help normalize and spread the word. This could be an in-person discussion or even an online forum. Open discussions about masturbation can be seen as signs of people opening up to the topic, based on our Self-Pleasure Report, it is said that 60% of U.S. adults are comfortable talking about masturbation with their friends or partners.

3. Learn more about masturbation

Similar to any topic, there is always something new to learn about masturbation. Whether it is the best way to masturbate, the benefits of masturbation, how masturbation can improve relationships, or how it helps you sleep. Wouldn’t it be fun to learn new ways of masturbating and enjoying it such as edging?

Summary

Remember, International Masturbation Day is all about normalizing and celebrating masturbation as something that is normal, natural, and enjoyable.
