Are Aphrodisiac Foods Real?

As we mentioned, there are a variety of different foods and even drinks infamous for being aphrodisiacs. The question is, do any of these foods actually work? The short answer is no. At least, not in the general perception of what an aphrodisiac should do. There is little to no evidence that these foods will miraculously spike your libido and get your blood pumping. There are, however, foods or ‘modern-day aphrodisiacs’ that have a more proven record of helping your general health in certain ways, which may, in turn, help your sex drive among other things.

What Are The ‘Modern-Day Aphrodisiacs’?

While the traditional oysters and strawberries may be lacking in their purported miracle effects, there are plenty of foods that you may already be eating every day that count as a ‘modern-day aphrodisiac’. These foods work on helping to increase anything from stamina to blood flow, which can lead to the potential of a healthier sex life.

We’ll take a look at some of these foods and what they help with, to give you a general idea of what foods you can eat (or eat more of) to possibly improve your sex life.

Which Foods Stimulate What?

Here are just a few examples of modern-day aphrodisiac foods and what they do to help your body.

Salmon - high in omega-3 fatty acids, which is essential not only for a healthy heart, omega-3 also helps your libido by assisting the production of key sex hormones such as estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone.

Celery - while not being overly sexy, contains small amounts of androstenone, a male pheromone that women can find attractive in men.

Avocado - the Aztec word for avocado is "ahuacatl" which means "testicle" which may explain their high levels of vitamin B6 (helping increase testosterone production), folic acid and vitamin B9 (to give you more energy).

Garlic - contains a lot of allicin which increases blood flow and overall cardiovascular wellness. As well as being great for stamina, you can probably imagine how increased blood flow helps to get things going!

Ginseng - this well known healthy herb is beneficial for many reasons but can help libido and your sexual performance in the process.

Chilli Peppers - these contain capsaicin that stimulates the nerve endings on the tongue. This creates a tingling sensation that increases the release of epinephrine (better known as adrenaline) and endorphins, one of the body's natural opiates. These hormones can help to get you in the mood to spice up your sex life a little!

. Oysters - while the miracle aphrodisiac effect of oysters might not be as potent as the tales suggest, oysters can still help. They contain large amounts of the amino acid tyrosine, a nutrient that helps in the production of dopamine. Dopamine, in turn, can help counter a low libido, plus the high levels of zinc aid in the production of testosterone and sperm production.

Saffron - well known in history as an aphrodisiac, it seems these stories might hold some truth. In more recent studies, saffron has been shown to help increase sperm motility in infertile men.

Pomegranates - rich in antioxidants, they can also decrease inflammation to increase the blood flow to all areas of your body. That may be why some studies report pomegranate juice may help with erectile dysfunction.

Why Should I Eat These Foods?

Of course, none of the above foods are guaranteed to solve all of your sexual issues, however, they do have proven health benefits to the body. As you can see, all the foods mentioned are generally considered healthy ingredients to a balanced diet, with none of them being overly unhealthy when consumed in moderation. Effects range from increasing libido, helping with sperm production and mobility, increasing blood flow and key positive hormones among other benefits. Even if an immediate, viagra-like boost is not seen after consumption, these foods can steadily help to build a healthy body, which can only be beneficial with your sex life!

Are There Foods That Improve Your Sex Life?

As you can see, there are no miracle foods out there that can give the immediate boost to your sex drive or get your partner(s) in the mood. That being said, if you commit to eating some of the foods mentioned above for the benefits they contain, the health effects may be seen in time.

If you are looking to improve your sex life naturally through just the intake of food then it wouldn't hurt to incorporate some of the foods mentioned above into your daily meals! However, dietary needs are different for every individual so check with your doctor if you're concerned about anything.
